Introduction

INTRODUCTION More versions of visual studio are out and can be downloaded from the Microsoft website



The express edition is the free version which can be downloaded and installed for free.

There are other paid up versions and trial versions

Note: The express version does not have all the functions.

In these tutorials we are going to be using VISUAL BASIC 2010

Visual basic is mainly used to create windows applications

GETTING STARTED

You simply begin by downloading the visual studio free edition from Microsoft download center

LAUNCHING THE  APPLICATION

Once the application is installed you can launch from the start menu and selecting Microsoft visual basic 2010 express-ENU

This is the software interface

Once the project launches click on file on the main menu and select new project Or simply click new project icon

A new dialog appears. By default windows form application is selected.And below it a name of the project is windows application1. Change this name to that of your choice.

NOTE ON NAMING THE PROJECT

The name should be descriptive of what the project does Example CALCULATOR should perform some calculations. Once you have named the project click ok on the dialog box.

THE INTERFACE

Once the project loads you are presented with a new form. The form as several properties which are shown on the bottom right hand side depending with your settings.

Changing the properties

On the properties area check on the text property, by default the name is form1. click inside this name(form1) and delete it and change it to name of your choice Example  calculator

Once you click on the form again the name is displayed on the form. You can change many of the other properties of the form on the properties window in a similar way.
